Para mí el auto es mi forma favorita para viajar con mis perras y mi gata. Porque no tengo límite de peso, tamaño, de cantidad de animales, restricciones de tamaño, ni requisitos muy específicos, y puedo organizar las paradas y las rutas como me quede mejor en función de mis animalitos.
Sin embargo, esto no me exime de contemplar la seguridad de ellas que -para mí- es lo más importante.
Normativa general
La normativa general dice que “el conductor de un vehículo está obligado a mantener su propia libertad de movimientos, el campo necesario de visión y la atención permanente a la conducción, que garanticen su propia seguridad, la del resto de ocupantes del vehículo y la de los demás usuarios de la vía. A estos efectos, deberá cuidar especialmente de mantener la posición adecuada y que la mantengan el resto de los pasajeros, y la adecuada colocación de los objetos o animales transportados para que no haya interferencias entre el conductor y cualquiera de ellos”.
Y un perro o gato muchas veces puede interferir en estas factores generando un accidente. Es cierto que también puede estar sujeto de una forma que no afecte al conductor, pero eso no significa que sea seguro para la mascota.
Vamos a repasar las formas de sujeción o transporte que tenemos dentro de un coche
1 🚗 Arnés + cinturón: no es cualquier arnés, sino que debe ser diseñado especialmente para viajes de perros en auto, contar con un buen gancho de seguridad que se agarre al pretal (ojo es muy importante que sea arnés y no collar!) y a su vez al cinturón de seguridad humano, y cumplir con las normas que regulen el lugar donde estamos viajando. En el caso de Europa la ECE R17 o DIN 75410-2. Nosotras usamos el de @kurgo y lo pueden encontrar en nuestro shop de Amazon!
2 🚗 Transportín: se recomienda atarlo con el cinturón de seguridad como una persona o -en lo posible- que vaya en el piso entre el asiento delantero y el trasero ya que en caso de choque el transportín puede romperse.
3 🚗 Jaulita en el baúl o reja divisoria de seguridad: también deben estar homologadas por las normativas vigentes en donde estemos.
Siempre consulten las regulaciones del país donde viajan, éstas aplican a la Unión Europea y pueden variar (como todo!)
Por mi parte, y obse como soy, seguí investigando para entender cuál era la forma más segura -además de común- para viajar en auto con perros y gatos.
Dicho esto les cuento mi investigación y conclusiones.
Viajes en coche: la seguridad las mascotas
Las 3 formas para transportar un perros/gato en un auto son las mismas pero hay algunas cosas a tener en cuenta en lo que respecta a seguridad:
1 🚗 Arnés + cinturón: deberíamos usar solamente los que fueron diseñados especialmente para viajes de perros en auto y testeados para choques. Estos arnés vienen con un gancho lo suficientemente fuerte para aguantar un choque y un peso determinado según el tamaño que compremos y una especie de “correa” para agarrarlo al cinturón de los humanos. De esta forma sí hay un choque, y se activa el airbag de los asientos traseros, los perros estarían resguardados. Las marcas que conozco con este sistema y los testeos correspondientes son: @sleepypod @kurgo @ruffwear
2 🚗 Transportín: ideal para perros o gatos chiquitos, yo les aconsejaría usar alguno como los de @sleepypod que tienen agarres especiales para ir en el asiento trasero y también están testeados para choques de la misma forma que el arnés. Si hay un choque el airbag trasero es el que protege al animalito. De ser otro transportín que no tenga estos testeos, debería ir en a los pies asiento trasero, detrás del conductor o el acompañante.
3 🚗 Jaulita en el baúl o reja divisoria de seguridad: las hay de diferentes tamaños y/o medidas y se colocan en el baúl de los autos tipo “familiar”. Vienen testeadas para choques pero atenti! el testeo en el caso de la jaula es para que la misma se rompa de una forma segura para el auto que choca de atrás, y no para el perro (esto se debe a la deformación programada de la carrocería que tienen muchos autos) . Explicado simple: la seguridad es para el otro auto y no para nuestro perro. Vi solo una marca de USA que en teoría no se rompen si el choque es trasero pero no me quedó muy claro. Por otra parte, las rejas no dan ninguna seguridad porque el perro va completamente suelto. Deberíamos elegir las que están homologadas para autos que no deberían romperse en caso de un choque para que el perro no salga despedido por el parabrisas.
Mi conclusión
Nosotras viajamos mucho en autopista, entonces mi conclusión fue que la forma más segura para ellas es: el arnés (para Frida y Juana), y el transportín (para Mecha) de las marcas que mencioné más arriba.
Y más allá de esta info siempre chequeen la normativa del país, aunque en general siempre se prioriza la seguridad de los humanos y la comodidad del conductor, pueden tener algún requerimiento especial.
Bienestar animal en los viajes
⚠️ Además, me parece sumamente importante pensar en el bienestar de nuestros amigos de 4 patas y tener en cuenta:
• Que el perro o gatito esté habituado a viajar de estas formas, si no consultar con un adiestrador de confianza
• Si se marea consultar con nuestro veterinario
• Hacer paradas de descanso
• Cuidar las temperaturas y nunca dejar a nuestro perro o gato expuesto a altas temperaturas

For my part, and see how I am, I continued investigating to understand what was the safest way -as well as common- to travel by car with dogs and cats.
That said, I will tell you my research and conclusions.
Car travel: pet safety
The 3 ways to transport a dog/cat in a car are the same but there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to safety:
1 🚗 Harness + belt: we should only use those that were specially designed for dog travel by car and tested for crashes. These harness come with a hook strong enough to withstand a shock and a weight determined according to the size we buy and a kind of “strap” to hold it to the human belt. In this way, if there is a collision, and the rear seat airbag is activated, the dogs would be protected. 2 🚗 Carrier: ideal for small dogs or cats, I would advise them to use one like the ones from @sleepypod that have special grips to go in the back seat and are also crash tested in the same way as the harness. If there is a collision, the rear airbag is the one that protects the animal. If it is another carrier that does not have these tests, it should go in the rear seat foot, behind the driver or passenger.
3 🚗 Cage in the trunk or dividing security grid: there are different sizes and / or measures and they are placed in the trunk of “family” type cars. They come crash tested but hey! The test in the case of the cage is so that it breaks in a safe way for the car that collides from behind, and not for the dog (this is due to the programmed deformation of the body that many cars have). Simple explained: safety is for the other car and not for our dog. I saw only one brand from the USA that in theory do not break if the crash is rear but it was not very clear to me. On the other hand, the bars do not provide any security because the dog is completely loose. We should choose those that are approved for cars that should not break in the event of a collision so that the dog does not get thrown through the windshield.
My conclusion
We travel a lot on the highway, so my conclusion was that the safest way for them is: the harness (for Frida my BC mix and Juana my JRT), and the carrier (for Mecha my tortie cat) of the brands I mentioned above.
And beyond this info always check the country’s regulations, although in general the safety of humans and the comfort of the driver are always prioritized, they may have some special requirement.
Animal welfare in travel
