Trucos: enseñando a dar vueltas!

 English translation below

Qué vamos a necesitar?

What is the use of teaching tricks or skills to our dogs or cats, to use them before, during or after the trip?

When traveling, have a repertoire of skills:

✅ helps to spend energy before a trip in a hotel, airport or rainy day

✅ helps to feel more comfortable in an unfamiliar environment

✅ change focus in a stressful situation

✅ play and relax in a new space

✅ make the use of a conveyor positive

✅ among others

Teaching our dogs tricks has a purpose beyond teaching them something fun:

We strengthen the bond with our best friend: little by little we are building our own language

We stimulate their cognitive development and intelligence

We give him a daily activity and prevent him from getting bored

We enrich your environment

We give you physical and mental exercise

Before starting, I leave you some tips to keep in mind:

As we are going to use food, we always check with our veterinarian about what food our friend can eat

The food we use should be small (1 × 1 cm) and if possible soft so that it can be swallowed more easily

Remember that the main purpose of these tricks is to share a nice moment and have fun together. If something is frustrating our dog, we can always lower the level of difficulty, put more focus on petting and treats and if any problem persists, we always consult with a behavior specialist!

And finally, some precautions to take into account:

If we live with several dogs at home, let’s do this exercise with one dog at a time to avoid problems such as fighting for food or our attention.

And if in doubt, always consult with a canine behavior professional. From getting nervous or aggressive around food or if they notice that you are not enjoying it as we expect, it is always best to consult and evacuate any questions.

What are we going to need?

Small pieces of food (prizes), 1x1cm. Remember to consult with your veterinarian if you have doubts that you can and what not to eat our puppy. We are going to use this food to teach our dog to go around through a positive association between food and action.

How long to practice?

Little bit, remember that something short and successful is always better than long and that our dog gets bored, wants to leave or we lose his attention.

5 minutes, a couple of times a day is more than enough. This frequency can vary according to each individual, however what I tell you is a standard time that we can take as a reference. It is always better to finish the practice while our dog is still hooked on the activity and not wait for him to get bored.

Rewarding with food

The basis for teaching most tricks is hand tracking. In other words, our hand will function as the guide to show my dog what we want him to do. If you follow my hand with your snout, I’m going to give you a little piece of food / prize.

We started!

We are going to show our dog that we have food in our hands. The idea is that he knows what is food, sniffs it but he cannot eat it yet. We can put the food in our hand and close it like a fist, leaving a little space for our dog to know that there is food there.

1) With our hand we are going to guide our dog from the muzzle very slowly around us. First the right hand guides it to start the semi circle and the left hand finishes it (you can watch the video to make it clearer). Remember that both hands have to have food.

Don’t worry because the first few times it runs smooth and super fast. This step can take several days and repetitions.

When he finishes passing behind our legs, we are going to say “very good” (you can choose the word you want to congratulate him, but it should always be the same), wait 2 seconds, we give him the prize we had in his hand and he we make some caresses.

2) We repeat step 1 until fluid comes out. In other words, our dog already knows that when we start to make that gesture with our hands, he has to go behind our legs and he will receive a very rich prize and he does it in a row.

It is important to repeat the same protocol each time: very good ”, wait 2 seconds, we give him the prize we had in our hand and we caress him.

3) In this step we are going to incorporate a word that we are going to associate with behavior, and we are going to leave the exercise to our thinking, to resolve.

That is, we are going to say: “back”, we wait 2 seconds, and we guide it with the food as in step 1 and 2.

4) What will happen is that in a moment our dog will solve the exercise and when we say “turn” he will already initiate the action of going behind our legs. Do not forget to always congratulate him, give him a piece of food and caresses.

It is important to respect the hand tracking, the congratulatory protocol and use them neatly whenever we teach something new. In this way our dog understands You will learn the logic of learning, you will solve the exercises faster and faster and we will learn to communicate in a highly effective way.

We always prioritize fun, love and patience on our part.

The idea is to have a nice time together!
