English translation below

I will tell you how I made Juana 🐶 (and Mecha 🐱) love their travel carriers!

Do not wait to have the travel date for this, the sooner you start the better!

And remember that what I am telling you here – although it has a large part of technique – is my personal experience with my dog and my cat. Each doggy or kitty is a living being, unique, with certain experiences, fears and previous experiences. So if you have any questions or problems that arise, please consult with a suitable professional ♥ ️

So, let’s start:

  • I leave the crate within reach, in the middle of the living room, in places that we usually hang out, play or enjoy together. The idea is that the crate is 100% accessible in case your furry friend want to investigate what it is. So I will allow to get in, explore and even put a blanket with a familiar smell so that she/he feels encouraged to smell, investigate and above all, that such a new object does not feel strange.
  • Step 1 may take us several days, and we are not going to do much, just allow the bag to become part of our daily life.
  • After these days, I can start by making a path of very rich food so that following it it gets inside the bag while it eats it (or at least it supports the front legs or a part of its body). This will depend a lot on each animal: some have no problem entering completely the first day, others take more time. The previous experiences of each animal will play a very important role.
  • I’m going to do these training sessions as games. They will be short and I will repeat them daily. And I will progressively try to encourage each day to enter a little more (legs, half body, whole body, etc)
  • Once he puts his whole body in, very slowly I offer him food and try to get him to move and even turn or lie down inside the bag.
  • It depends on how stable and natural we have this step, we can offer their daily food in there or even an interactive toy. The idea is that you associate the bag only with positive moments and situations.
  • When he gets into it with more confidence, I start with the closing process: if it is the large conveyors (those of the warehouse or cargo) that are dismantled, I start without the top part; And if they have closure, I start by closing very little (never all at once), each day a little more until closing it completely. The same with the upper part: first we are going to have the conveyor very well used without the “roof” and when this is very stable, we will go on to the next steps.
  • When I close it completely, I increase the closing time very slowly and progressively: the first day I close 1 second, the second day 5 seconds, and thus very short and positive until reaching minutes / hours. I can work this closing process several times a day to achieve more time, but it is important to always be very careful not to rush and to respect the times of each animal.
  • And the same with moving the carrier, I’ll do it once the dog is very comfortable in there. The first movements will be smooth until you can walk normally or move the carrier around the house.

Extra tips:

  • Let’s not forget to be very respectful and patient with the times and the process, if a step takes time, I give it all the time it needs and we work a little every day. It helps me to keep a kind of record where I write down what I work every day and the level of difficulty reached.
  • I will work using the conveyor as a game, and never force entry or exit
  • When I go to train these exercises, it is always advisable that the dog or cat as much as possible is tired and not full of energy. So lying down and staying still is easier and more natural
  • If I need to, I can go back in the steps that I am working on. Don’t see it as a negative. It is a lot to improve to advance with firm steps, and not in a hurry
  • If the puppy knows how to stay still with a word, we can use it to extend the times inside the bag or we can even teach him to enter with a word 😉
  • Be very careful with the stability of the bag or carrier, because if our little animal is encouraging to enter and for some reason the bag moves, giving it a feeling of instability, it can get scared, take several steps back and even raise awareness, making progress difficult
  • Remember that if every time you enter the transporter it is to go to the vet to be pricked, I do not think it is a very pleasant place for you. It is important to accustom the conveyor to positive situations
  • And if you have a very negative association – for example you see it and hide it – you might as well buy a new one and start the job from scratch.
  • This works for all conveyors (large, small, flexible, hard, etc.)

Gracias! Pd. Soy fan de Mecha
